2-7-13 youth sports highlights

The Waconia youth wrestling team traveled to Canby on Jan. 26 for an eight-team tournament. Competing against teams from Minneota, Quad County, Redwood Valley, BOLD, Marshall/Lakeview and Canby, the youth Wildcats were undefeated in the tournament and beat Watertown (South Dakota) for the championship.

The Waconia JO 14-1 girls’ volleyball team was undefeated the weekend of Jan. 25-27 in the Farmington 16’s tournament. The team defeated Roseville for the title and includes, front row: Anna Osterberg, Natalie Benson, Makenzie Merritt, Annie Christensen, and Lexi Kretsch; back row: Jessica Grengs, Tatum Johnson, Lauren McNulty, Kenzlie Andresen, and Lauren Swee; not pictured: Niky Platt and coach Jim Lee.

The Waconia eighth grade girls’ basketball team recently went undefeated at a St. Anthony tournament, defeating Bloomington for the championship. The team includes, front row: Mariah Horning, Madison Schuler, Makenzie Merritt, and Marisa Alto; back row: coach Brian Reighard, Molly Reighard, Ellie Hukriede, Sophie Flucas, Lynsey Olson, and coach Gedric Merritt.

Defeating Buffalo for the title, the Waconia fifth grade boys’ basketball team was undefeated in Delano’s Eye of the Tiger tournament Jan. 25-27. The team includes, front row: Travis Lenz, Regan Merritt, Basil Baumann, Angel Ramirez, and Seth Wolf; back row: coach Tom Frey, Mateo Ramirez, Alexander Flucas, Collin Rohlik, Nick Frey, Zach Berney, and coach Gedric Merritt.
