Sports 2-14-13 youth sports highlights Published February 13, 2013 at 4:59 pm Waconia’s fourth grade WBA girls’ basketball team recently won a tournament in Chaska. The Waconia fourth grade boys’ basketball team took second at a tourament in Buffalo on Feb. 10. The team includes, front row: Isaac Schiffler, TJ Jensen, Cole Hedberg, and Josh Baughman; back row: Conner Behrens, Spencer Swanson, Grant Iverson, Jack Olson, and Ben Christains. The team is coached by Chad Christains and David Behrens. The WBA fifth grade girls’ team recently won the Chaska Super Classic tournament, defeating teams from Chanhassen, Minnetonka, and Armstrong. The team includes, from left: Lexi Oleson, Maria Kirsch, Taylor Braun, Kali Wolf, Tess Johnson, Chloe Jaeger, Libby Drey, Jayda Lenz, Ellie Dammann, Ellie Gove, and coach Steph Dressen. The Waconia tenth grade co-ed soccer team plays on Wednesdays at the Burnsville Soccer Blast, November through April. The team includes, front row: Elizabeth Honnold, Caroline Watson, Hailey Schoenfelder, Tim Widmer, Truen Breegeman, and Austin Bruggeman; back row: Maddie Harris, Emily Zempel, Claire Sites, Shannon Conway, Marae Vipond, and Ken Siebert; not pictured: Daniel Miller, Erinne Nagy, and coach Bill Miller. Maxx and Sam Stanton both took first place at the Minnesota State Karate Championships on Feb. 10. The annual tournament featured competitors from across the state. Maxx and Sam competed in traditional forms. They train at Dojo Karate in Waconia under Ms. Cote and Ms. Frydenlund. Maxx is a sixth grader at Clearwater Middle School, while Sam is in second grade at Bayview Elementary. The Waconia Squirt B hockey team recently won two tournaments, beginning at Hutchinson on Jan. 13. The next weekend, the team shut out Owatonna Silver (10-0), Albert Lea Blue (7-0), and the Sioux Falls Flyers (2-0) for the Owatonna tournament title. The U16-17 Waconia girls’ soccer team has been playing soccer all winter on Saturdays at the Minnetonka Dome. The team includes, front row: Hannah Niesen, Caroline Watson, Elizabeth Honnold, Bailey Breegemann, and Alecia Alto; middle row: Emily Zempel, Erinne Nagy, coach Bill Sites, Sophie Steinbrueck, and Marae Vipond; back row: Devin Breegemann and Claire Sites; not pictured: Bridget Muehlberg, Emily Hilk, and Shannon Conway. The Waconia U12 girls’ hockey team won the District 6 regular season championship with a 3-0 win over Chaska/Chanhassen on Feb. 5. The team finished the season 15-0-1, the first undefeated district season in Waconia Hockey Association history. The team includes Sally Scheuble, Cassie Balow, Alyson Battis, Riley Rassman, Morgan Wood, Maddie Fleming, Ellie Erenstein, Jadyn Huebner, Madison Denzer, Lauren Hickey, Maddie Brandt, Rachel Hendrickson, Makenzie Ickert, and Sara Braland. Coaches are Jeff Balow, Tom Battis, John Brandt, Marvin Denzer, and Emilee Lerol. The District 6 playoffs begin Feb. 16.
