Former Morrison County Sheriff Paul Tschida has taken over the chief deputy job at the Carver County Sheriff’s Office. He replaces former Chief Deputy Denny Owens, who retired on Jan. 31.

Ten individuals have been convicted in a gang-related shooting in Chaska that apparently involved members of the Latin Kings and other individuals claiming to be part of a gang known as the Laos Boys. The investigation into the July 2001 shooting of Kongpheng Phomphene lasted for a year and a half.

Command Sergeant Major John Hokkanen of Cologne, a member of the Army Reserves, has been called to active duty in support of Operations Noble Eagle and Enduring Freedom.

A court order to repair the old Hayloft building in Norwood has been served after the owner did not respond to an initial repair order. Once the court order is approved, the city can go in and begin clean up the building. However, the city attorney has advised the council that the city should not spend more than can be assessed to property taxes, and said it might be better off to raze the building than attempt to repair it.

TVS Recycling in Norwood is baling shredded newsprint into animal bedding, which has become popular with area farmers for animal bedding. In December, TVS collected 96 tons of newsprint and made 1,051 bales of animal bedding. The newsprint is cheaper, cleaner and easier to use than traditional straw.

Charges have been filed against the dump truck driver involved in an accident that caused the death of five Norwood teens last September. The Montrose man was charged with one count of speeding after a State Patrol report said the minimum speed of his truck at the time of the accident was within 60-64 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Young America City Council members laid out a plan to repair the old city hall building. The first phase of the repairs would include basement and structural repairs, drain gutters and drain tile and ventilation in the basement. Bonding or city funds were suggested as sources for the repair costs. Fundraisers are also planned.

Local legislators, including Representative K.J. McDonald, Senator Earl Renneke and Senator Bob Schmitz are co-authoring a bill that would change the process of hazardous waste siting in the state. McDonald said there is now unnecessary emphasis on underground burial in socially and environmentally unsound sites.

Central’s one-act play “Echoes” took second place at the region competition. Cast members were Christopher Grimm, James Boyle and Lourdes Herrera. Dennis Stanek was the director.

Doctors Clinic in Norwood will open Monday, Feb. 19. Doctors Cecil L. Provence and Agustin Palattao will head the clinic. A fund drive for the clinic is in progress, but between $30,000 and $40,000 in shares have already been sold. Reports from those involved indicate a remarkable enthusiasm from people being contacted for the drive.

A group of farmers from Jessenland Township have organized to oppose NSP’s building of a power plant in that township.

A community development corporation is being planned in Young America. The corporation is looking to attract industry to the area.
