In the team’s final tournament of the regular season, the Waconia wrestling squad finished sixth of nine teams at Mound-Westonka on Feb. 8.

Monticello took home top honors with 192 points, followed by South St. Paul (160), Glencoe-Silver Lake (144), Eastview (142), and Mound-Westonka (120). Waconia scored 106 points to defeat Buffalo (93), WEM/JWP (86), and St. Paul Como Park (48).

With many varsity regulars having hit their regular season match count, many junior varsity wrestlers earned some tournament experience. Meanwhile, only three Wildcats placed.

Senior Riley Trnka and junior Jacob Steinbauer both won their individual weight divisions. Junior Zach Buffington also placed.

Getting sixth, despite the perhaps inexperienced wrestlers, “was pretty good,” according to WHS head coach Kelly Wagener.

The Wildcats finished the regular season 13-7 and tied for third in the Wright County Conference with Glencoe-Silver Lake (6-3 conference records).

Team sections begin this Thursday, Feb. 14, with the Wildcats seeded sixth and slated to battle No. 11 New Ulm at Jordan High School, beginning at 6 p.m. If Waconia wins, they will immediately wrestle No. 3 Scott West at 7:30 p.m. Individual sections will be Feb. 22-23 at Waconia High School.
