In a 6-2 loss to No. 3 seeded Bloomington Jefferson on Feb. 8, the No. 6 Holy Family/Waconia girls’ hockey team has been eliminated from the Section 2AA tournament.

Head coach Ryan Rice said the wind was knocked out of the Wildfire’s sails early in the game, when the Jaguars scored eight seconds in. The Jaguars scored again at 6:32.

“Going down 0-2 early was a hard thing for our girls to overcome, but they kept fighting,” Rice said. “When they netted the third, the fourth and fifth followed real soon after. Then we started to play harder, but it was too little too late.”

By the start of the third period, the Wildfire trailed 5-0. Freshman Megan Menzuber scored on a power play at 1:14 in the third, assisted by sophomore Abby Hanscom and junior Shania Gonzales.

Hanscom found the back of the Jaguar net at 9:44, assisted by freshman Makayla Williams.

Bloomington Jefferson sealed the Wildfire’s fate at 15:18 by hitting goal number six. The Jaguars outshot Holy Family/Waconia 27-15. Freshman Lexi Hartmann saved 21 shots for a .778 save percentage.

Rice said the loss was tough and felt the team didn’t bring the needed “A” game.

“We thought we matched up fairly well with Jefferson,” he said. “They are a very good skating team and I believe that is what got to us in the end. They were beating us to loose pucks all night.”

Look for a full season wrap up in the coming weeks.
