WHS students are ‘Triple A’-okay

Waconia seniors Anna Pioske and Matt Rachey were recently selected as Waconia High School’s 2013 Triple “A” award representatives.
Established in 1988, the Academics, Arts, and Athletics Award (Triple “A”) is a recognition program sponsered by the Minnesota State High School League. The award goes to high school seniors who hold a “B” or better grade point average and who are active in fine arts and athletic activities. The purpose of this program is to recognize and honor high school seniors who have excelled in the classroom, on the athletic field, and in fine arts, as well as to elevate academic standards and create greater awareness of the value of high school activities.
Pioske is an active athlete in both volleyball and track and field. In volleyball, she is a three-time letter winner, three-time All-Conference athlete, a two-time All-Metro athlete, a two-time All-State player, and was a finalist for the 2013 Minnesota Baden Ms. Volleyball award. She was captain for the 2012-13 school year and holds the school records for most season and career kills. She is a four-time All-Conference athlete in track and field and holds, or is a part of, three school records.
Pioske is a longstanding member of the National Honor Society, and has been a member of the Wright County Conference All-Academic volleyball (three times) and track and field teams (four times). Along with two-time Minnesota All-State Academic Honors and multiple MSHSL Spotlight on Scholarship Gold awards, Pioske holds a 3.817 grade point average, placing her on the honor roll every trimester. Her involvement in the arts includes two years in the high school instrumental band and pep band.
Pioske also participates in Peer Helpers, Peer Mentors, America Reads, and the international club. She volunteers at Ridgeview Medical Center and has served as a counselor and coach for many youth volleyball camps. She is the daughter of Brian and Patty Pioske.
Rachey plays on both the varsity basketball and boys’ golf teams at WHS. He is captain of the basketball team this season, is a three-year letter winner, was an All-Conference athlete last season, and was a member of the 2011 third place state team. In golf, he is a four-time All-Conference athlete, a two-time All-State athlete, two-season captain, and five-year letter winner. He has qualified for the state tournament three times, most recently in 2012 where he finished fourth.
Rachey is a four-year member of the National Honor Society, has been a member of the WCC All-Conference Academic basketball (two times) and golf teams (four times), is a four-time Minnesota All-State Academic athlete, and has received several MSHSL Spotlight on Scholarship Gold awards. With a blemish-free 4.0 GPA, Rachey is a long-standing member of the WHS “A” Honor Roll.
A two-year member of the instrumental and pep bands, Rachey is also involved in Peer Helpers, Peer Mentors, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and America Reads. He volunteers as a Sunday School teacher, Feed My Starving Children, Waconia Food Shelf, Kelsey & Kalley Short Memorial, Dollars for Scholars, and Toys for Tots. He has also served as an instructor and coach at a variety of youth basketball and golf camps. He is the son of Keith and LuAnn Rachey.
Pioske and Rachey’s nominations have been passed on to the Section 2AA committee for further consideration. A banquet will be held in February to honor all Section 2AA representatives and two winners will be announced to represent the section at the state level.
