Girls’ hoops wins in double overtime

Last week brought a few surprises for the Waconia girls’ basketball team.

After a double-overtime victory over Delano on Tuesday, the Wildcats were upset by Glencoe-Silver Lake.

Two overtime periods were needed to determine the winner of the Wildcats’ Feb. 12 matchup at Delano.

Leading 47-32 at halftime, the ‘Cats offense hit a wall in the second half, scoring only 17 points.

At the end, the ‘Cats found themselves up by three with 14 seconds to go. Delano hit a last minute three-pointer at the five second mark to send the game into over.

Each team scored just four points in the first overtime, driving the contest into double overtime. One minute in, Waconia hit a big three-point shot, and would then outscore Delano 7-2 in the final minutes to put the game away and win.

The Wildcats’ shot 38 percent from the floor (26-68). Senior Caroline Jacobs and sophomore Anna Schmitt led the Waconia charge, both netting 18 points. Seniors Stephanie Dressen and Morgan Iverson scored 11 and 10 points respectively, as the other two ‘Cats in double figures.

Rebounding was important for the Wildcats in contrast to their cold second-half shooting, outrebounding Delano 14-6 in the first half and 41-24 overall.

In just their eighth loss of the season, the Wildcats fell at Glencoe-Silver Lake on Feb. 15. After having outrebounded the top-rebounding Tigers a few days previous, the ‘Cats fell apart against the Panthers, and were outrebounded 44-24.

“Just a few nights after dominating the boards as a team we seemed to take the night off from rebounding,” said WHS head coach Carl Pierson.

With the game tied with under a minute to play, the Panthers went twice to the free throw line and made 2-4 shots to win by two points.

Just two Wildcats posted more than four points on the night. Schmitt (24) and Jacobs (18) scored over 75 percent of the team’s points.

“The balanced scoring that has been our great strength all season evaporated on that evening,” Pierson said.

The Wildcats hosted Orono in their final game of the regular season on Tuesday, Feb. 19.
