The Section 2AA team wrestling tournament was held Feb. 14 and 16 last week. The No. 6 seeded Waconia Wildcats first defeated No. 11 New Ulm, before being eliminated by No. 3 Scott West.
Waconia 55, New Ulm 6
The Wildcats’ first foe of the evening on Feb. 14 was No. 11 seeded New Ulm. Having previously defeated the Eagles 69-0 on Jan. 24, head coach Kelly Wagener said the team went into the match with confidence.
Eighth grader Justin Schultz got the match going for Waconia by pinning Hunter Ranweiler at 2:37 in the second period. Freshman Josh Reich also pinned his opponent at 0:21 in the first period, starting a string of nine straight wins for Waconia.
Eighth grader Alex Logelin won a 6-1 decision, before junior Jacob Steinbauer won a 7-3 decision. Freshman Owen Hemze picked up a 9-1 major decision and sophomore Nick Green won a 7-2 decision.
Sophomore Mason Hemze won a 9-0 major decision over Sam Hoppe before fellow sophomore Jed Waligoski won a 15-0 technical fall over Riley Sheigren at 5:47 in the third period.
Eighth grader Dylan Gluck pinned Nathan Janke at 2:40 in the second period. Senior Max Bullock won by forfeit.
Senior Riley Trnka and sophomore Eli Teeselink rounded out the match with two wins for WHS. Trnka pinned Braxton Greenwaldt at 1:12 in the first period, and Teeselink won a 4-2 decision over Andy Bregel for the 55-6 victory.
Scott West 49, WHS 23
Just after finishing off New Ulm, the Wildcats had to turn around and face the No. 3 seeded Scott West Panthers, a dominating co-op between Belle Plaine and Jordan, currently ranked in the top 10 Class A teams.
Wagener said the Wildcats started off low.
“We let them kind of dictate how we were going to wrestle,” he said. “We were down 18-0 before we even knew what was going on.”
In fact, the Wildcats would be behind 25-0 before picking up their first win from Owen Hemze. Hemze pinned Jake Wierke at 5:35 in the third period to pick up six points for WHS.
Mason Hemze also pinned his opponent in the closing minute of the third period (5:34).
Bullock earned a 19-2 technical fall at 5:42 over Jake Schultz and Trnka rounded out the night for Waconia with a pin on Ray Carter at 3:29.
With the loss to Scott West, the Wildcats were eliminated from the team tournament, but still have the opportunity to send individual wrestlers to state.
The Section 2AA individual tournament will be held Feb. 22-23 at WHS, beginning Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. Two individuals from each weight class are eligible to qualify for the state tournament.
