Central teacher, librarian and drama director Jim Spille retired in mid January after 35.5 years in education, including 23 years at Central Schools. Spille said one of the best things about retirement is that it will give him more time to read.

After terminating county administrator Dick Stolz on a 3-2 vote last month, the new Carver County Board of Commissioners considered changing its form of government to hire a county manager or coordinator. Board members ultimately agreed to keep the administrator position and seek out candidates.

Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City dashed Central’s hopes of a surprise trip to the state wrestling tournament with a 38-33 win in the section semifinals.

The search for a new Young America city administrator is over. Roger Winberg will take the job after previously working a temporary position as director of the Main Street Project in Princeton.

The Young America Community Improvement Program is hosting a bingo fundraiser over the next month at the fire station to help raise funds for a new entrance gate and sign for Willkommen Memorial Park.

School board filings open March 9 for District 108. Incumbents are Richard Feltmann, Gary Grimm and Richard Heckmann. The election is set for May 18.

About 25 area firefighters, some from Young America, used over 21,000 gallons of water to battle a blaze at the Jerry Kahle residence in rural Waconia, but the home was all but destroyed by the fire, which was well established by the time firefighters arrived. No one was home at the time the fire started. A benefit is being planned for the family.

Roy Winkler of Cologne is making use of a new heating technology. He has constructed an outside wood burning block structure containing a firebox with pipes which circulates hot water to and from his house.

The City of Norwood is looking to buy a used pumper fire truck from the City of Brandon for about $25,000.

An open house for the new Doctors Clinic in Norwood attracted a crowd of 2,200 on Feb. 16 and 17. Doctors A.D. Palattao and Dr. C.L. Provence began their practice in Norwood on Feb. 19. The open house was also featured in the Sunday edition of the Minneapolis Tribune.

Sharon Futhey, age 36, of Norwood, passed away on Feb. 19 after a head on auto crash two days before. Four passengers in the other vehicle were seriously injured.

A number of Central wrestlers are advancing to the region tournament, including Stan Werner, Bruce Meuwissen, Dan Kranz, Tony Baumann and Russ Smith.
