Nearly 70 calves lost in dairy barn fire

Carver County Sheriff Jim Olson reported last week that on Feb. 12 at approximately 3:43 a.m., his Office received a 9-1-1 call of a barn fire on 182nd Street in San Francisco Township.

Upon arriving, deputies observed a fully engulfed dairy barn. The barn was a total loss and 67 calves and one cow died in the fire.

Preliminary findings indicate the cause of the fire was electrical.

Fire departments from the cities of Carver, Belle Plaine, Cologne, Hamburg and Chaska assisted.

Ridgeview Ambulance was also on scene. The Carver County Highway Department assisted due to the extremely icy conditions as a result of the amount of water used to fight the fire.
