The Watertown-Mayer/Waconia/Delano/Holy Family swimming and diving team was represented by one swimmer and one diver at the Class AA state meet last week at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.
Zach Holman, a sophomore, competed in two events for the Royals, but did not qualify for the finals. In the prelims on Thursday, Feb. 28, Holman finished 19th in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 48.48 seconds. He also competed in the 200-yard Individual Medley, finishing in 27th place with a time of 2:02.25.
Gens, also a sophomore for the Royals, finished in 26th place in the diving prelims, but actually was in a position to finish much higher, and possibly even advance to the finals, until one dive proved costly.
Gens was in 10th place after three dives and in 14th place after four dives. Divers need to be in the top 16 of 32 after prelims in order to advance to finals.
However, Gens’ toes touched the board on his fifth dive, a full twisting 1 1/2 somersault, meaning the max score each judge could give for the dive was a 2.0.
Look for a season wrap up story on the boys’ swimming and diving season in the coming weeks.
