The Watertown KIPS gymnastics team finished its last competition of the season at the Division 4 state meet in Farmington. Coming into the state meet, the KIPS team was the lowest ranked team at the meet, but after an outstanding day of competition, they posted a score of 124.25, their best score of the season, to take second place behind only Northfield.
The KIPS gymnasts had many strong routines on all four events with many of the gymnasts placing in the top 12. On the vault, Taylor Hix (3rd), Ailsa Gilbert (5th), Kylie Hoese (6th), and Grace Wagner (11th) posted the top scores for KIPS. On the uneven bars, Gilbert (4th),Hoese (7th), and Paige Thibault (8th) led the way with personal best scores. The top finishers on the balance beam included Wagner (5th), P. Thibault (7th), Kate Thibault (3rd Novice), and Courtney Lueschen (11th).
It was the floor exercise, however, where the KIPS team really shined with six of the gymnasts placing in the top 7. Gilbert won the floor competition with a score of 8.725, the highest floor score out of all the division state meets. Other outstanding performances included Wagner (3rd), Hix (5th), P. Thibault (6th), Hoese (7th), and K. Thibault (3rd Novice).
“I’m always very pleased with how the floor routines go for every gymnast because we spend a lot of time working on choreography and being exact,” coach Afton Windsperger said. “I always tell the girls to put on a show, and that’s what they did.”
Windsperger was named Coach of the Year for Division 4.
