Cancer Awareness Day event set for April 6

Relay For Life Waconia and Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia are joining forces to celebrate local cancer survivors and kick-off this year’s Relay For Life of Waconia fundraising efforts with Cancer Awareness Day in Waconia on Saturday, April 6. This year’s theme is “Spread HOPE one step at a time.”
A special event, the Cancer Awareness Day/Relay For Life Kick-Off, will be held in conjunction with the day from 10 a.m. to noon at Muller Family Theater (101 W 1st Street, Waconia) on April 6. The event is free and open to the public but preregistration is requested by contacting (952) 442-8084 by Wednesday, April 3.
If you’d like to join others for lunch at Terra in Waconia, mention that when you RSVP as well. Terra is located at 140 W Main Street. The lunch will cost $12 per person, including coffee, hot or iced tea.
The community is invited to come hear about life-saving treatments found at Ridgeview Medical Center, and how programs such as Relay For Life of Waconia are changing the face of cancer forever.
Relay For Life team members will be on hand to answer questions about joining or starting a Relay For Life team. For those who have already signed up, fundraising packets will be available for pick up. Attendees will enjoy free refreshments and door prizes.
The event also features a presentation by keynote speaker, Erik Therwanger, a former U.S. Marine, the founder of Think GREAT, and the author of The Think GREAT Collection (www.thinkgreat90.com).
Therwanger uses his experiences as his wife’s caregiver to teach people how to stay focused on their goals, especially during challenging circumstances. He has served as a legislative ambassador with the American Cancer Society. He speaks at Relay events, leads a fundraising team, and has served a event chair for Relay For Life of Agoura Hills, Calif., in 2011, which raised more than $100,000.
“Ridgeview Medical Center is pleased to partner with the Relay For Life of Waconia in support of the designated Carver County Cancer Awareness Day, and to help bring information about all of the cancer care services and support resources available to area residents and their families,” said Lisa Hurt, RN, MA, Director, Ridgeview Medical Center Oncology Service Line, Home Health & Hospice Services.
“We are thrilled to partner with Ridgeview Medical Center for this exciting event,” said D.J. Teeselink, chairwoman of the Relay For Life of Waconia. “The public is invited to attend this free event, which is an opportunity to kickoff the Relay season.”
Teeselink noted that Waconia Mayor Jim Nash will be proclaiming April 6, 2013 as Cancer Awareness Day in Waconia at the city council meeting on April 1 and Carver County Commissioner Tim Lynch has already proclaimed April 6, 2013 as Cancer Awareness Day in Carver County.
