The Mayer Lutheran track and field teams are ready for 2013 and kicked off the season at Belle Plaine on April 1.
Last season, the girls won their home invitational and the 4A Sub-Section meet and finished second at LeSueur-Henderson, St. Croix, and True Team Sections (by one point). The girls advanced three events to the state meet. The 4×200 team set a new conference record during the season, as did Jessica Klaustermeier in the 200-meter dash.
The boys finished second at home, LeSueur-Henderson, St. Croix, and True Team Sections. They also finished fifth in the MRC and also won the Sub-Section 4A meet on May 24. The Crusaders advanced two relays to state.
The Crusaders graduated six seniors in 2012 including All-Conference athletes Sean Bartz, Jessica Klaustermeier, Nicole Manteuffel, Josie Schreiner, and Honorable Mention athlete Jennifer Krentz. Also gone are former seniors Anna Boote and Lindsay Pallas along with former exchange student Consti Sigglekow (All-Conference). Klaustermeier was also the 2012 MRC’s Most Valuable Track Athlete.
Although many decorated seniors graduated last season, many All-Conference athletes remain including: Alex Fredrickson, Kyle Fredrickson, Jesse Greenhagen, Nathan Schneewind, Holly Johnson, Ashlyn Hucky, and Sam Bartz, along with last year’s Honorable Mention winner Matthew Carlson.
First meets: The Crusaders kicked off the season on March 23 at Minnesota State University, and then competed at Belle Plaine on April 4. At Belle Plaine, the Crusader girls’ scored 78 points, tying with Jordan for third place.
Top five finishes for the girls included: Allie Erdmann (fourth, 100-meter hurdles; fifth, 300-meter hurdles); Sarah Ruschmeier (fifth, 1600-meter run); Holly Johnson (fourth, 800-meter run; fifth, 400-meter dash); Maria Kuntz (third, high jump); Hannah Truniger (first, 3200-meter run); Miriam Wilson (second, discus; fourth, shot put); and Ashlyn Hucky (second, triple jump).
The girls’ 4×800 relay team of junior Sam Bartz, Kuntz, Ruschmeier, and Truniger finished second, while the 4×200 team (Mielke, Hucky, Nico Schmidt, Belle Flucas) was third. Bartz, Kuntz, Ruschmeier, and Johnson, who make up the 4×400 team, finished second at 4:36.60.
The Crusader boys finished fourth at Belle Plaine with 93 points.
Individual point earners included: Nathan Schneewind (third, pole vault; fourth, 110-meter hurdles); Jeremy Price (fifth, 100-meter dash); Chase Greenhagen (fourth, 1600-meter run); Alex Fredrickson (first, 400-meter dash); Jesse Greenhagen (second, 3200-meter run); Mark Esser (second, discus); Matt Carlson (first, pole vault), Jacob Carlson (fifth, pole vault); and Taylor Otterstatter (fourth, triple jump).
The Fredrickson/Greenhagen relay team won the 4×800 in 8:49.70, ten seconds ahead of second place Jordan. The 4×400 team (Chase Greenhagen, Kyle Fredrickson, Colin Hilk, Rhett Kovar) won in 3:49.70. Mayer Lutheran’s 4×100 team (Price, Dain Aarrestad, Jacob Carlson, Matt Carlson) was third.
