Raymond F. “Ray” Schmieg, age 89, of Victoria, passed away on Monday, April 15, 2013 at his home at Westview Acres in Waconia.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, April 19, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Victoria Catholic Church (8228 Victoria Dr.), Victoria with Father Bob White as Celebrant of the Mass; visitation was Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the Mass on Friday all at St. Victoria Catholic Church; vigil prayers were at 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening; interment St. Victoria Catholic Cemetery, Victoria.
Ray was born on Feb. 20, 1924 in Victoria, Minn., the son of Francis and Margaret (Snicker) Schmieg. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Victoria Catholic Church. On June 8, 1948, Ray was united in marriage to Frances T. Poppler at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Waconia.
Ray is preceded in death by his parents Francis and Margaret Schmieg; sisters and brothers Francis ‘Jimmy’ Schmieg, Father Robert Schmieg OFM, Father Brennan Schmieg OFM, Delores (Andrew) Ditsch; brother-in-law Myron Mechtel.
Ray was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Ray was a carpenter his whole life. Ray and Franny were inseparable; whatever one was doing the other was with. He was the caretaker of St. Victoria Catholic Cemetery along with Franny for over 40 years. Ray enjoyed playing the concertina and the accordion in his spare time and loved listening to polka music. Church was very important to Ray attending on a daily basis. He would take his long walks visiting with numerous people along the way. Ray and Franny had a vegetable and flower garden which they loved to work in, canning quarts of different vegetables every year. He liked going to the grandchildren’s events visiting with everyone there. Ray made quilts and liked putting puzzles together.
In his younger years Ray enjoyed ice fishing on area lakes. Every Saturday night Ray and Franny ate at the Victoria House at the same table. He will be missed.
