The Mayer Lutheran boys’ golf team kicked off its 2013 season at the annual Harry O’Connor golf tournament hosted by Shattuck-St. Mary’s on April 27.
Of the 16 teams competing, the Crusaders finished in 13th position with 362 total strokes, defeating Richfield (363), Fridley (364), and Nevis (390). The host team took top honors with 289 strokes, followed by Grand Rapids (300).
Andrew Wolf was Mayer Lutheran’s top competitor of the tournament, scoring a total 88 strokes (43-45). Jared Scrimgeour (48-42), Joe Zittergruen (46-45), and Tim Renner (46-47) scored in the low 90s with totals of 90, 91, and 93 strokes, respectively. Chad Anenson and Evan Quaas rounded out the Mayer Lutheran players with 105 and 116 strokes.
The Crusaders went on to play a dual against St. Croix Prepatory Academy on April 29 at Oak Glen Golf Club, narrowly losing 353-355. Zittergruen tallied Mayer Lutheran’s lowest score of the day with 83 strokes, closely trailed by Anenson at 88. Scrimgeour and Wolf stayed close with 91 and 93 strokes, respectively, while Anthony Gruenhagen and Renner were at 100 and 104.
Mayer Lutheran will compete at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan on May 6 and back down to Shattuck-St. Mary’s on May 8. The Crusaders will host Trinity May 10 at ShadowBrooke Golf Course, beginning at 4 p.m.
