WMHS boys’ golf team opens with three meets in four days

After a long delay to start the year, the golf season got off to a rapid start last week with three meets for the Watertown-Mayer boys’ team.

The Royals opened the Minnesota River Conference season with a meets on Tuesday, April 30, at LeSueur Country Club, and also competed Thursday, May 2, at Montgomery Golf Course and Friday, May 3, at the Hutchinson Invite at the Crow River Golf Club.

In Tuesday’s season-opening meet in LeSueur, the Royals finished in seventh place with a 201 at the nine-hole meet. Jordan won with a 176 and Mayer Lutheran was second at 185.

Individually for the Royals, eighth-grader Josh Lueschen led the way with a 48, while Jacob Grotbo and Matt Fritzke both carded 50s. Jacob Menth and Jacob Wandersee were both at 53, and Dan Dressel shot a 55.

Justin Ruhland of Tri City United and Zander Stier of Belle Plaine tied for medalist honors, each shooting a 42.

“Overall, I was a little disappointed with our scores, but it was our first match of the season and we only had one outdoor practice, so the boys really struggled with their pitching and chipping,” Watertown-Mayer coach Tyler Finkelson said. “I look for us to knock off quite a few strokes once we get a chance to actually get outside and practice a little.”

At Thursday’s meet at Montgomery, the Royals finished in sixth place out of nine teams, shooting a 392 at the 18-hole meet. Jordan won with a score of 340, and St. Peter was second at 354.

Grotbo led the way for the Royals with a 94, good for 20th place, while Lueschen shot a 96 and finished 22nd and Menth shot a 97 and finished 25th. Also for Watertown-Mayer, Wandersee shot 105, Chase Hoese shot 118 and McKinley Gohlausen shot 133.

“The boys are playing better, but we need to drop off a few strokes individually if we are going to move up ion the MRC standings,” Finkelson said.

Finally, on Friday at Crow River Golf Club, the Royals shot 389 to finish in 11th place in a meet that was won by Bloomington Jefferson. No individual results were available.

The Royals were also in action Monday, May 6, for an MRC meet at Ridges at Sand Creek, and they’ll return to action Thursday, May 9, for an invite at Pebble Creek. They’ll be back at Ridges at Sand Creek for an invitational on Friday and Saturday, and on Monday, May 13, they’ll compete in an invitational at Belle Plaine.
