Community partners hit a home run for Waconia schools

“Take me out to the ball game ….”

The song that we all enjoy singing during the seventh inning stretch may be sung a lot more often now that District 110 Community Education received a $6,350 grant from the Twins Community Fund.

Funding from the Minnesota Twins Fields for Kids Matching Grant Program will enable Community Ed to leverage other district resources in order to renovate the infield and install first and third baseline fencing at Bayview Elementary Field #3.

Currently, this field poses both safety and quality of play issues due to the rough infield. The field also lacks foul line fencing to protect spectators and players. Improvements will be made this summer, and will allow more kids to play ball safely and on better quality fields. Time to “… root, root, root for the home team.”

And, speaking of roots … sooner or later, we’ll be seeing Clearwater students working in the Edible Classroom, which is our school garden and orchard on the south side of the middle school building.

The Edible Classroom has also been the recipient of a grant from the Whole Kids Foundation, which will provide $2,000 to be used for professional and curriculum development to integrate innovative lessons plans for the Edible Classroom. The money will also be used to expand the irrigation system to the orchard. Irrigating the fruit trees will help increase production of fruits that can be used in the school meal program.

We anticipate that the trees will begin bearing fruit this year, although it might be a bit later than usual, given our spring weather.

Finally, the Carver County Farm Bureau has awarded a $1,000 grant to cover the costs of sending three Waconia School District staff to the National Agriculture in the Classroom Conference to be held in Minneapolis on June 25-28, 2013. Two Clearwater teachers, Michelle Melius and Britta DeVinny, are also presenting at this national conference.

Each of these grants is a good example of the partnerships that help to make our school district strong. Thank you to all of our community sponsors for your continued support of the Waconia Public Schools. Together we are better!
