WHS girls’ golf sneaks into second

With strong showings last week in Mound and Annandale, the Waconia girls’ golf team has moved up to second place in the Wright County Conference, still trailing Litchfield by 72 strokes, but holding a 23 stroke lead on Holy Family.

“The girls continue to play well,” WHS head coach Dan Benham said. “I was happy to see us gain control of second place in our conference.”

At Lakeview Golf Course in Mound on May 8, the Wildcats finished third with 182 strokes behind Litchfield (170) and Holy Family (173).

Sophomore Meagan Rachey golfed a meet-winning 39 strokes, tying with Litchfield’s Kennedy Sommerfeld. Senior Jenna Lund had a great outing, landing in a three-way tie for eighth place at 45 strokes.

Not far behind Lund was junior Brittany Johnson at 48. Eighth grader Lauren McNulty golfed a 50 on the top, while freshman Jade Scrimgeour (51) and sophomore Bridget Muehlberg (53) also competed.

The Wildcats continued their strong week on May 10 at Southbrook in Annandale, tying for second place with Hutchinson at 183 strokes, behind Litchfield (170).

Rachey won the meet with 39 strokes. McNulty came in as the ‘Cats number two golfer with 47 strokes, closely followed by Lund (28) and Johnson (49). Scrimgeour golfed a 52, while Muehlberg sat at 59.

The Wildcats are at New London-Spicer tonight, May 16, and will play twice at Dassel-Cokato May 20-21.
