The Watertown-Mayer boys’ golf team improved from a seventh-place finish last year to a fifth-place finish this year as the Minnesota River Conference season came to end last Wednesday, May 22, with a pair of nine-hole meets at Glencoe Country Club.
The Royals finished in sixth place on the front nine, but finished tied for third place on the back. On the front, Jordan won with a 176, followed by Tri City United at 185, Belle Plaine at 187, Mayer Lutheran at 191, Norwood Young America at 191 and Watertown-Mayer at 192. On the back nine, Norwood Young America finished first with a 183, Jordan was second at 187, and Mayer Lutheran and Watertown-Mayer tied for third at 189
Overall, the Royals finished the conference season with a score of 1,167. Jordan won the conference title with a score of 1,044, Mayer Lutheran was second at 1,115, NYA was third at 1,121 and Belle Plaine was fourth at 1,155.
On the front nine last Wednesday, Dan Dressel led the Royals with a 45. Jacob Grotbo shot a 47, and Jacob Menth also broke 50 with a 49. Jacob Wandersee, Matt Fritzke and Josh Lueschen all carded 51s.
On the back nine, Menth led the way for the Royals with a 42, good for fourth place. Dressel shot a 47, Grotbo was at 49 and Fritzke shot a 51. Wandersee carded a 53 and Lueschen shot a 54.
The Royals are back in action on Thursday, May 30, for the first round of the section meet at Pebble Creek Golf Club. For those individuals that advance to the second round, or if the Royals are among the top four teams advancing to the second round, that will be played Monday, June 3, also at Pebble Creek.
