After its final Wright County Conference meet at Dassel-Cokato on May 20, the Waconia boys’ golf team held on to third place in the WCC with a total 1,870 strokes, just 12 shy of second place Litchfield. Orono took home top honors for the season.
“Guys did a great job making up shots and had an excellent finish,” said WHS head coach Paul Henn.
The team finished the regular season May 22 at an invitational in Dassel-Cokato. Just one stroke shy, the Wildcats were runners up to Delano, but held off third place St. Michael-Albertville. Senior Matt Rachey was the individual runner up, scoring a 76 on the day.
As for individual conference standings, Rachey finished second in the WCC at 359, eight back from Delano’s Jordan Peters. Senior Kyle Kauma also received All-Conference honors for his tenth place finish at 381. Junior Blaine Wilsey was named All-Conference Honorable Mention for finishing 25th in the conference.
Kendall Banyai just narrowly missed the All-Conference list by finishing 26th.
The ‘Cats are off this week as they prepare for the Section 2AAA tournament, which begins June 3 in Jordan. Henn said the team’s goals are two-fold.
“For the section, we hope first to get to the second day as a team,” he said. “If we do that we showed last year that anything can happen!”
The Wildcats’ section includes much larger schools including Bloomington Jefferson, Bloomington Kennedy, Burnsville, Chanhassen, Chaska, Eden Prairie, Lakeville South, Mankato West, New Prague, Prior Lake, and Shakopee.
