Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday May 31, 2013, at 4 p.m. at The Church of the Immaculate Conception in Watertown with Father Joseph Fink as the Celebrant of the Mass; a gathering of family and friends 2 hours prior to the Mass at church; interment Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
Barbara was born on Oct. 18, 1924, in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur and Julia (Raymond) Pettit. On March 28, 1944, Barbara was united in marriage to Frank F. Carlson in Des Moines, Iowa.
Barbara spent most of her married life in Watertown, raising her family and being an active and involved citizen in the community. She was on the hospital auxiliary board, served a term on the city’s planning commission, belonged to Watertown Park Board in charge of designing multiple gardens within Watertown. She worked with the Watertown 4-H club designing and installing the royal blue and white “Welcome to Watertown” signs at the triangle of county roads 10 and 24, was active in the “Flower Girls” placing flower baskets around town and planting lilies and hostas in different areas of town. Was an active member of the Watertown Legion Auxiliary and the Catholic Church. Besides helping her husband in their grocery store, she also worked at the Watertown Medical Clinic and the Carver County News office. Barbara was a charter member of the Watertown Historical Society and a member of the Carver County Historical Society. She spent countless hours recording the deceased in each of the Watertown area cemeteries and presented her completed work to the various churches involved. Along with other members, she created the Lewis Avenue business display for the 2006 ‘Rails to Trails’ weekend. Barbara especially enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be missed.
Barbara is preceded in death by her husband Frank ‘Cully’ Carlson; son Richard Carlson.
Barbara is survived by her loving family: children and spouses Victoria Smith and partner David Vanasek of Eden Prairie, Christopher and Pam Carlson of Maple Grove, Thomas Carlson of Las Vegas, Nev., Frank and Debbie Carlson of Elk River, Kevin and Cindy Carlson of Maplewood, Denise Hertzog of Watertown, Patricia Carlson and partner Jack Buss of Hopkins, Heidi and Scott Frederiksen of Eden Prairie; grandchildren Greg and Shari Smith, Kristin Smith and fiancé Chris Beason, Tiffany Carlson, Becky and Jesse Steinkopf, Brian Carlson, Jeremy Carlson, Sarah Carlson, Andy Carlson, Donny Carlson, Justine Carlson, Dylan Carlson, Jessi Carlson, Cully Carlson, Amy Carlson, Natalie Carlson fiancé Pete Swenson, Tyler Carlson, Thomas Hertzog, Carly Hertzog, Ashley Schuler and partner Stephen Ronning, Taryn Frederiksen, Timmy Frederiksen, Teddy Frederiksen; 16 great-grandchildren; sister Virginia Good of Grand Island, Neb.; sister-in-law LaVerne Carlson of Watertown; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.
