Although the team did not advance to Day 2, the Mayer Lutheran boys’ golf team had its best meet of the season last week during the Section 4A tournament at Victory Links in Blaine.
“While as a team we did not advance to the second day, we took five of our six players back as individuals, more than any other team,” LHS head coach Jerry Jensen said. “And while none advanced to state our four low scores, a 348, was our best performance of the year.”
The Crusaders finished sixth in the section, with a score of 81 on Day 1. Legacy Christian, St. Croix Preparatory, Southwest Christian, and Heritage Christian schools all advanced to Day 2, with Legacy Christian being crowned section champion.
Senior Jared Scrimgeour and junior Joe Zittergruen were the Crusaders’ top golfers of the tournament. Scrimgeour finished with 173 total strokes after golfing an 87 on Day 1 and an 86 on Day 2. Zittergruen finished Day 1 at 86 and Day 2 at 89 for a total 175 strokes. Sophomore Andrew Wolf finished at 176, after going 89-87 for the two days of play. With 93 strokes on Day 1, junior Chad Anenson finished at 86 for Day 2, tallying 179 total strokes. Junior Anthony Gruenhagen finished Day 1 at 91 strokes and golfed a 100 on Day 2 for 191 strokes total. Senior Cole Carns did not advance to the second day of competition, but still golfed a 97 on Day 1.
Look for a full season wrap up in the coming weeks.
