LHS advances three events to state track

Five athletes in three events will represent Mayer Lutheran at the Class A state meet this Friday and Saturday at Hamline University in St. Paul. The Crusaders qualified for state after the Section 4A meet at Macalaster College on May 30.

The Crusader girls finished sixth as a team of the 21 teams in the section, tallying 69.75 points. The Breck School won the team competition with 127 points. The LHS boys’ team was seventh of 23 teams with 53 points behind team champion St. Croix Lutheran (156).

Freshman Hannah Truniger qualified for her first state track and field meet by finishing second in the 3200 meter run on May 30. She not only bested the state qualifying time by nearly 40 seconds with a final time of 10:48.39, but she also bested the meet record by seven seconds. Unfortunately, Truniger was to be bested by the Blake School’s Clare Flanagan, who took home event honors and the meet record with her time of 10:38.74.

Fredrickson finished second in the preliminaries to New Life Academy’s Sam Hagen, and finished second to Providence Academy’s Nicholas Manciu in the finals.

Fredrickson will also run the opening leg of the boys’ 4×800 relay at state. Finishing third with a time of 8:16.32, the Crusaders’ 4×800 team of Fredrickson and seniors Alex Fredrickson, Jesse Greenhagen, and Chase Greenhagen snagged their state tournament berth by besting a predetermined qualifying time of 8:18.14.
