Meagan Rachey to make state golf debut

The Waconia girls’ golf team made a strong showing at the Section 2AAA meet June 3-4, held at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.

The Wildcats failed to qualify as a team for Day 2 of the tournament, but turned in strong Day 1 scores, led by sophomore Meagan Rachey. Rachey finished with a 74 on Day 1, qualifying her for Day 2. With a Day 2 cutoff of 93 strokes, senior Jenna Lund just narrowly missed the second day of competition with a 96 on Day 1. Lauren McNulty finished at 99 strokes, three back from Lund.

Brittany Johnson golfed a 111 on Day 1, while Jade Scrimgeour (122) and Audra Thurman (128) also competed for Waconia.

As the team’s sole advancer to Day 2, Rachey finished with 77 strokes, sealing a fourth place section finish at 151 strokes and qualifying for her first state tournament.

“Meagan played well throughout the year and had a strong showing at sections,” said WHS head coach Dan Benham. “She has the opportunity to do well at Bunker Hills.”

New Prague’s Kenzie Niesen and Shakopee’s Alex Schmid tied for the section title with 146 strokes. New Prague took home the team title and state berth with a total score of 679, over Eden Prairie (686), Prior Lake (691), and Chaska (715).

The Class AAA state tournament was held June 11-12 at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids. See next week’s issue for results.
