On the heels of senior Matt Rachey’s section-winning performance, the Waconia boys’ golf team put together its two best days of competition this season for a third place team finish during the Section 2AAA meet on June 3-4 at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.
“Another amazing run in section play in a very tough section,” Waconia head coach Paul Henn said. “Our seniors led the way.”
The Wildcats shot a 306 on Day 1 to qualify for Day 2 as a team, where they shot a 307. With identical scores, Waconia tied with Lakeville South for third place in Section 2AA. Eden Prairie was the overall winner at 597, followed by Chanhassen (608). New Prague finished fifth at 615.
Rachey qualified for his fourth state meet by winning the individual Section 2AAA, shooting four under par for the two days of competition. He shot a 69 on Day 1 and a 71 (35 in, 36 out) on Day 2 for a total of 140 strokes, six ahead of second place Jack Pexa of New Prague.
Waconia senior Kyle Kauma finished in a four-way tie for 18th position with 155 total strokes. Kauma shot a 79 on Day 1 and improved to a 76 on Day 2, going 38 in, and 38 out.
Junior Blaine Wilsey finished 25th, tied with Prior Lake’s Chase Cooper at 159 strokes. Wilsey shot a 79 on Day 1 and an 80 on Day 2 (41 in, 39 out).
Sophomore Kendall Banyai finished in the top 30 competitors of the section, in a five-way tie for 29th position with 162 strokes. Banyai shot 37 in, 43 out (80 total) on Day 2 after golfing an 82 Day 1.
Ryan Mattson wrapped up his senior season with the Wildcats by finishing with a total 164 strokes after shooting a 79 on Day 1 and an 85 on Day 2. Junior Mike Vigil, who debuted late in the season for WHS, also competed in the section meet, finishing with 176 strokes, 94 on Day 1 and 82 on Day 2.
Rachey will compete at the Class AAA state meet June 11-12 at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids. He finished fourth in last year’s state meet.
