Albert E. “Al” Dahlke, age 86, of Waconia, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, June 15, 2013.
Funeral service was held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at the St. Joseph’s Catholic School Gymnasium (41 E. First Street) in Waconia with Dr. Amy Gohdes-Luhman of the Waconia Moravian Church as the officiant. Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia and also Tuesday one hour prior to the service. Military Honors provided by the Waconia VFW Post 5462 and the Waconia American Legion Post 150.
Albert “Al” Dahlke was born on April 9, 1927 in Houlton, Wis., the son of Albert A. and Elsie D. (Rehder) Dahlke. He was baptized and confirmed at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stillwater. Al was a graduate of the Stillwater High School and attended St. Olaf College. Al had served the country by enlisting into the United States Coast Guard. On Nov. 7, 1951 Al was united in marriage with Arlene R. Gentz at the chapel of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Al had worked as a boiler engineer and creamery lab tech prior to running Dahlke Sales and Real Estate and the Waconia Sewing Center. He was a member of the Waconia Moravian Church, the Ridgeview Hospital Board, the Crow River Realty Board, Civil Defense, and the Waconia VFW and American Legion Posts where he had served both as commander.
Al enjoyed hunting and fishing, playing cards, trap shooting and was an avid reader. Al cherished the time with his family.
Al is preceded in death by his parents, brother and sisters-in-law Floyd and Joyce Dahlke, Patricia Dahlke; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Shirley and Sidney James; brothers-in-law James Gentz, Ralph Stender.
Al is survived by his loving family: wife Arlene Dahlke of Waconia; children and their spouses Robert and Lynne Ganser of Green Isle, Bonita and Dennis (Spike) Ess of St. Bonifacius, Bruce A. and Chris Dahlke of Waconia, Barbara Bather of New Rochelle, N.Y., Brenda and Steven Oftelie of Norwood Young America, Beverly and Gary Plaster of Lake Forest, Ill., Bethann and Mark Boll of Maple Plain, Rebecca and Peter Hill of Excelsior; grandchildren Danny Ganser and special friend Kelli Oelfki, Jesse Ganser, Stephanie Ganser, Brad Ess and special friend Erica Kosmatka, Patrick Ess and wife Jaime, Chris Ess and wife Rachel, Matthew Dahlke, Nicholas Dahlke and special friend Natalie Pearson, Travis Bather and wife Martha, Adam Bather and wife Lindsay, Amanda Bather, Nicole Oftelie, Nathan Oftelie and special friend Lindsay Bassman, Neil Oftelie and special friend Megan Hauser, Natalie Dorr and husband Jon, Madeline Plaster, Gary Plaster, Brittany Elsen and husband Nicholas, Megan Boll and special friend James Foley, Kaitlin Boll, Miranda Boll, Zachary Hill, Paige Hill; great grandchildren Jaxen, Arianna, Treiton, Jada, Paige, Elizabeth, Tyler, Jacob, Alex, Karisa, Albert and Annabelle; brothers and sisters-in-law Robert and Barbara Dahlke of Stillwater, Vernon and Norma Dahlke of Flag Staff, Ariz.; sisters-in-law Dorothy Stender of Waconia, Lois Gentz of Harlingen, Texas; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Casket bearers are the grandsons and the granddaughters serve as honorary casket bearers.
