Former area baseball standouts injured in car crash

A former standout pitcher from Holy Family Catholic High School was seriously injured Sunday afternoon when the car he was riding in, driven by a former Waconia High School baseball star, was involved in a collision with a pickup truck on Highway 7 near New Germany.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Kasey Ralston, 18, of Chaska, was injured while riding in a Pontiac Grand Am driven by Dalton Sawyer, 19, of Waconia. The vehicle was headed south on Carver County Road 33, when it was struck in the intersection by a Chevy Silverado pickup heading east on Highway 7 with the right of way.

Ralston, who was a key player on Holy Family’s state championship team in 2012, was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in critical condition. Sawyer, who appeared in 18 games for the University of Minnesota this year, mostly as a relief pitcher, suffered only minor injuries. Both players currently play for the St. Cloud Rox of the Northwoods League.

None of the four occupants of the pickup truck, including a 2-year-old child, suffered serious injuries. All were wearing seat belts.
