Blood donations often decline during the summer months, but the need for all types of blood remains constant. Approximately every two seconds a patient is in need of a blood transfusion, and more than 38,000 pints of blood are needed every day.
According to the Red Cross, during the summer months of June, July and August, about two fewer donors give blood at each Red Cross blood drive than what patients need. In its summer campaign, the Red Cross is hoping to encourage at least two additional people to give blood at each drive.
The Red Cross says it is especially important to donate blood around summer holidays, when donations tend to drop even more.
