Local athletes excel at USATF meet

Four Waconia athletes recently competed in the 2013 USATF Minnesota Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul June 14-16.

Zach Olsem finished second in the pole vault of the boys’ 15-16 age division with a height of 11 feet, 10.5 inches. Paige Notch, who currently holds the Waconia High School record in the pole vault, finished fifth in the event at 08-11.5.

Ben Hedtke won the 800-gram javelin with a personal record throw of 104-08. Hedtke was also second in both the shot put and discus events. In the shot put, he finished with an outdoor personal record of 41-10.50, and threw 104-07 in the 1.6 kilogram discus.

Samantha Hedtke set a new state record in the girls’ 11-12 age 300 gram javelin. Her new record throw of 81-06 won the event. Hedtke later won the six pound shot put with a throw of 33-08 before winning the one kilogram discus at 77-06. Both throws were personal records.

All four athletes qualified for the regional event at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota July 4-7. The national competition, should anyone qualify, will be July 22-28 at A&T University in North Carolina.

Both Ben and Samantha Hedtke will compete in the upcoming Star of the North Games at Macalaster College on June 29.
