There will be a new face leading the Waconia boys’ golf team next spring as current coach Paul Henn announced in June that he would not return to the position in 2014.
After nine years, two conference titles, and two section runner up awards, Henn is ready to move on.
“With a new family and taking on some more professionally, I felt it was a good time to move ahead,” he said.
Henn will continue to teach social studies at Waconia High School. He will also remain the coach of the Norwood Young America Central High School football team.
Nearly every season of his tenure as the WHS boys’ golf coach, Henn advanced at least one individual to the state tournament, and also coached players to individual conference and section championships. He said with the program in the solid shape that it is currently, this was a good time to hand the reins to someone new.
“The program is in great shape and has some great returning kids for the new coach so the time felt right,” he said. “We have come off two solid conference and section finishes and I anticipate that to continue. My hope for the new coach is that he continues to enjoy the opportunity to work with our great kids and continue to develop their skills and love for golf.”
Through his years, Henn has been given the chance to work with many different athletes and coaches, and said the people are what he will miss the most about the position.
“This has been a great experience and I am very thankful to have had the opportunity to work with so many great people,” he said. “All of the other coaches and our home course of Island View and Dan Callahan has made this a very great and positive coaching experience. I will miss the kids, coaches, and others I have had the pleasure to work with.”
The District will soon begin the search for a new coach.
