Waconia community celebrates veterans, hosts Wounded Warriors

The Waconia Veterans Appreciation Weekend featuring the Wounded Warriors Amputee Softball Team was held in Waconia July 12-13.

The Wounded Warriors played three games during the weekend, losing 13-9 to a team of Minnesota celebrities on Friday and splitting two games on Saturday (defeating the Waconia Fire Department 7-6 and losing to Waconia area veterans 25-15). The weekend also featured several meet and greet events with the players and a community picnic at the fairgrounds.

In a related story, Wounded Warrior Josh Wege left Waconia on Saturday night to travel to New York to participate in the Taco Bell All-Star Legends and Celebrity softball game on Sunday. The game is part of Major League Baseball’s All Star week. At that game, Wege hit a home run and earned co-MVP honors with comedian Kevin James.

The weekend was coordinated by the Waconia Lions Club with the support of many area organizations, businesses and individuals. For photos and more information about the weekend, see this week’s Waconia Patriot.
