Steve Helget will be the new NYA city administrator.
As expected, the NYA City Council unanimously approved his contract during a special meeting on Monday.
The contract calls for Helget to start work on Wednesday, Aug. 21, at a salary of $82,179, according to current NYA City Administrator Tom Simmons.
Simmons had announced his upcoming retirement in late April.
Speaking on Tuesday, St. Paul-based Springsted, Inc. Senior Vice President Sharon Klumpp said negotiations were successful.
“I think that the negotiations went very well because we had an opportunity to talk about what was important to both the city and to Steve,” she said, adding the overall process went smoothly. “We worked within timeframes and that comes about because of their (the council’s) work and the candidates’ cooperation.”
Helget, 48, is currently the city administrator for the City of Montgomery, a position he has held since March 2006.
On Tuesday, he said he planned to meet with Simmons to review the budget and do some initial work and find a place to live.
“I’m very excited,” he. “I’m looking forward to starting the position there… I’m very excited to move to the community there and looking to learn more about NYA and the community and let them get to know me.”
He previously served as city administrator for the cities of Paynesville, Eagle Lake and Tyler and was a personnel clerk for the United States Army in Ulm, Germany and Fort Carson.
He received his bachelor’s degree in public administration with a local government administration emphasis from St. Cloud State University in 1991 and a masters in urban and regional studies with an emphasis in local government management in 1994 from Minnesota State University – Mankato.
He enjoys golf, baseball, hunting and fishing.
The NYA City Council will next meet on Monday, July 22, at 6:30 p.m.
