Lake Waconia Triathlon looks for new owners

After 24 years of success, the Lake Waconia Triathlon is making an ownership change. Recently Race Founder Tom Konrardy, current Race Director Marvin Denzer, and other committee members, including Jean Konrardy, Jeff Schnobrich, Tracy Shupe, Michelle Cox, Eric Nordin, and Shelly Denzer, executed an exit strategy to ensure complete ownership departure.

Much has changed over the years, but the essential philosophies held steadfast because of the scores of dedicated volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure a safe and successful race each and every year. Sincere appreciation is extended by Lake Waconia Triathlon founder and committee to everyone: the loyal and hardworking volunteers, sponsors like Gearwest, Ridgeview Medical Center, Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative and others, race participants, the City of Waconia, and many surrounding communities.

Over the past 24 years, the Lake Waconia Triathlon attracted thousands of triathletes who completed the 1/2-mile swim, 20-mile bike ride, and 4-mile run course. The committee extends great appreciation to each one of the triathletes who prevailed, sometimes during extreme or adverse conditions.

Race Director Marvin Denzer said there is nothing negative associated with the exit of the founding committee.

“It’s truly a personal decision because lives changes,” he said. “I think the committee feels it’s just time to turn the reigns over to somebody else.”

The committee plans to fully exit, meaning that none of them will be involved in the planning process next year, a process which begins in January.

“We wanted to give someone else a chance to take it to the next level,” Denzer said. “It’s time to free that Sunday up and let others take over the opportunity.”

The downside is if no one takes ownership of the Lake Waconia Triathlon, the event will likely dissolve.

Since its inception, the Lake Waconia Triathlon has been privileged to donate nearly $100,000 to local charities and organizations.

Any interested groups or individuals are welcome and encouraged to contact Marvin Denzer ([email protected] or (612) 719-9816) for more information on taking ownership of the Lake Waconia Triathlon so the summer tradition may continue for many more years.
