Hot weather forced the cancellation of the Minnesota River Conference scrimmage on Monday, but Central and Mayer Lutheran boys’ and girls’ cross country teams were able to start their seasons two days prior.
The Raiders and Crusaders, along with Glencoe-Silver Lake, took part in the Alumni Run at Baylor Park on Saturday morning.
Central won the girls’ race with 30 team points, while GSL took second (39) and LHS took third (83). For the boys race, GSL won with 27 team points, while the Raiders finished in second (52) and LHS took third (89).
Individually for the girls, GSL’s Victoria Burr crossed the line first in 15 minutes, 45 seconds, while Central runners made up four of the next six. Judy Larson and Abbie Schnabel finished 2-3 (15:52, 16:35) and April Feist and Dana Norman finished 6-7 (18:03, 19:11). Sommer Scott was the other counting runner as she finished in 12th place with a 20:06 clocking.
Central head coach Mark Lagergren was pleased with the team finish, considering both Parry Larson and Beth George did not run due to injury.
“Judy was 1:02 faster this year – ran very, very well,” said Lagergren. “Abbie Schnabel was 1:13 faster – also a great time this early.”
Emilie Berry and Karlea Kyllo highlighted times for LHS as they clocked times of 17:13 and 17:50, respectively. Also, Clara Geverich finished 23rd (22:43), Harley Hentges took 24th (23:01) and Grace Dietrich finished in 27th (24:20).
On the boys’ side, Mayer Lutheran’s Brandon Duffy won the race in 16:58, while Central’s Alex Wischnack finished third (17:33) and Ben Barth finished fifth (18:47).
“Alex took third overall – good time this early and only 14 seconds off of last year’s time,” said Lagergren. “Ben Barth had a good time.”
Other counting runners for the Raiders included Chase Heuer in 12th (20:09), Andrew Wischnack in 15th (20:42) and Devon Dvorak in 17th (20:48).
In addition to Duffy, Wyatt Entinger took 13th (20:33), Parker Esterberg finished 16th (20:47), Todd Johnson finished 29th (22:52) and Seth Pawna crossed the line in 30th (23:13) for LHS.
Central was set to host the MRC Jamboree on Monday, but hot weather cancelled the scrimmage. The hot weather has also shortened practices which are still being held outside, Lagergren said.
“Very good day for us – good times considering the less than ideal running conditions,” said Lagergren. “Most of the student-athletes were only 15 to 30 seconds off their times from last year. Last year, we had a great running day, so we are most definitely on the right track.”
The Raiders will next compete at Mongomery on Thursday, Sept. 5, at 4 p.m., before running again at Baylor Park on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 4 p.m.
