Girls swim team opens with loss to Mound-Westonka/HF

Twitter SportsThe Watertown-Mayer Delano swimming team opened its season Aug. 23 with a 96-73 loss to Mound-Westonka/Holy Family.

Despite the loss, the Royals won four events on the day, including three individual events and one relay.

Junior Kayla Stevens won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:05.22. Eighth-grader Jordyn Wentzel won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:32.20, and seventh-grader Morgan Frank won the 200-yard Individual Medley in a time of 2:23.10.

WMD also won the 400-yard freestyle relay. Senior Sommer Heikkila teamed with Frank, Stevens and Wentzel to finish in 3:58.01.

Stevens also added a second-place finish for the Royals in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 58.19 seconds. Frank was second in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:07.48, and Wentzel was second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:13.74.

The Royals finished second in two other relays. In the 200-yard medley relay, Thea Clark, Wentzel, Klara Koch and Lauren York teamed up to finish in a time of 2:02.46. In the 200-freestyle relay, Heikkila, Stevens, Caitlyn Rud and York finished with a time of 1:48.32.

York also placed third for the Royals in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 27.03 seconds. Kalley Johnson was third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:15.58.

The Royals will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 5, for a 5:30 p.m. meet at Marshall.
