On Friday, Aug. 23, the Royals lost four matches at the season-opening Albany Tournament. However, Watertown-Mayer responded in its home opener on Tuesday, Aug. 27, with a 3-1 win over Glencoe-Silver Lake. No stats were reported from the win over the Panthers.
In the Albany Tournament, the Royals lost 2-0 matches to Maple Lake, Sauk Centre and Albany. The Royals also fell to Little Falls, 2-1.
Over the course of the tournament, junior Ashley Vealetzek led the team with 46 kills, and senior Ashley Kelzer added 22. Senior setter Chelsea Wandersee had 17 and junior Lily Reinert had 15.
Wandersee added 86 assists, 37 digs, seven blocks and two aces throughout the course of the tournament. Senior libero Kiana Paulson added a team-high 53 digs.
Vealetzek added 32 digs and 12 blocks. Reinert had 20 digs, Kelzer had 19 and senior Britni Grossinger had 17. Victoria Lynch had four blocks. Grossinger had a team-high three aces on the day.
Watertown-Mayer was also in action Tuesday, Sept. 3, at Holy Family, after this edition went to press. The team returns to action Thursday, Sept. 5, at Belle Plaine, at 7:15 p.m., and will play in the Litchfield Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 7. The Royals are also in action Monday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. at Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity.
