The Waconia girls’ volleyball team opened the 2013 season last week with a match against Eden Prairie, a team that is currently ranked No. 9 in Class AAA. Falling 3-0 to the Eagles on Aug. 29, the Wildcats lost 18-25, 19-25, and 23-25.
Waconia head coach Jim Lee said Tuesday’s postponed New London-Spicer match affected the ‘Cats play.
“The postponed New London match, due to their facilities, really hurt our preparation for Eden Prairie,” he said. “Too many mental errors for the Wildcats contributed to easy points for Eden Prairie.”
Junior Jessica Wolf led the team with 12 kills, while junior Jenna Van De Velde had eight kills and three blocks. Senior Kirsten Wagener led the defense with six blocks, while sophomore Mikayla Williams had five and junior Anna Schmitt contributed four.
Senior Sam Paulson had 19 digs, while fellow senior Roz Holasek contributed eight. Lee said Holasek and Van De Velde did well working through first-match jitters to make contributions to Wildcat play and said he expects the team to continue to gel together.
“Our team will become more efficient as the season progresses,” he said.
The ‘Cats are at a tournament in Marshall this weekend. They begin next week on the road at Litchfield on Sept. 10 before hosting Annandale Sept. 12.
