A fatal accident involving a juvenile pedestrian being struck by a SUV on CSAH 33 in New Germany occurred on the evening of Friday, Sept. 6.
The Carver County Sheriff’s Office received a call about the incident at 8:24 p.m. The accident occurred on Stave Avenue (CSAH 33), just north of Monroe Street.
Lorenzo Divi Cotto, 8, of Brooklyn Park, was visiting family in New Germany. He was riding a non-motorized scooter on the roadway when he was struck by a northbound SUV. Cotto suffered severe injuries as a result of the collision. New Germany Fire and Rescue personnel and Ridgeview Ambulance paramedics treated Cotto at the scene. Cotto was transported by ambulance to Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the SUV, a 62 year old male from Waverly, stopped immediately after the collision and was cooperative throughout the investigation. There were no signs of impairment and he was released after providing a statement. His vehicle was impounded and was examined for physical evidence as part of the investigative process.
The Minnesota State Patrol also responded to the scene and will prepare an accident reconstruction report. The case remains under investigation until all reports are complete and submitted to the Carver County Attorney’s Office for review.
