The Watertown-Mayer/Delano girls’ swimming team won seven events last Thursday in an easy 114-55 win at Marshall on Sept. 5.
After Marshall opened with a win in the first event, the 200-yard medley relay, Kayla Stevens picked up the Royals’ first win in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing in a time of 2:05.19. Marshall won the next event, the 200-yard IM, but WMD’s Jordyn Wentzel took second in 2:22.46 and Sommer Heikkila took third in 2:36.91.
The Royals began to take over the meet in the 50-yard freestyle, where they swept the top three spots. Alexa Asbury was first in 28.12 seconds, Klara Koch was second in the 28.18 seconds and Caitlyn Rud was third in 29.0 seconds.
In the 100-yard butterfly, Marshall picked up another win, but Wentzel finished second for the Royals in 1:04.43, and Koch was third in 1:09. The Royals then proceeded to sweep the top three spots in the 100-yard freestyle, with Stevens winning her second event of the day in a time of 59.6 seconds. Emily Bobick was second in 1:00.88 and Lauren York was third in 1:01.55.
Frank picked up another win for the Royals in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:39.3, and Sydney Strobl was third in that event in 6:07.69.
The Royals won the 200-yard freestyle relay when Bobick, York, Stevens and Frank teamed up to finish with a time of 1:49.37. Asbury, Rud, Koch and Heikkila also teamed up to finish second, and Tara Koch, Sophia Fillmore, Taylor Preston and Colleen Costello also finished third for the Royals.
Marshall won the 100-yard backstroke, but Thea Clark was second in 1:11.80 and Jenna Grangroth was third in 1:14.95. In the 100-yard breaststroke, the Royals once again claimed the top three spots, with Kalley Johnson winning in 1:16.51, Maggie Jacobs finishing second in 1:19.49, and Mady Hendricks taking third in 1:20.48.
The Royals finished the meet with one more win in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Frank, Stevens, York and Wentzel finished with a time of 3:57.97.
The Royals will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 12, when they finally host their first meet of the season. Watertown-Mayer/Delano will take on Orono at 6 p.m. The Royals will also be at the Hutchinson Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m., and they’ll compete in a triangular at Waconia on Monday, Sept. 16, a meet that also involves Dassel-Cokato.
