In their first outing of 2013, the Waconia boys’ and girls’ cross country teams saw a dramatic improvement in performance at Montgomery on Sept. 5.
In the 2012 meet, the girls’ team was in the mid-teens and the boys’ team finished 27th. This season, under head coach Christian Gilbert, the girls’ finished third of 22 teams at the meet and the Waconia boys’ brought home an 11th place finish of 27 participating teams.
Medal winners for the Waconia girls included senior Lexi Willems, who finished seventh overall in 16:20.7, and junior Alora Rands who was 15th in 17:06.6.
Sophomore Carissa Dock finished 25th in 17:31.4, while junior Mikaela Kauma was 31st in 17:41.2.
Seniors Kortney Luedloff and Katherine Jensen finished in 49th and 53rd, respectively, with times of 18:17.8 and 18:22.8. Junior Mica Aslakson also competed for WHS, finishing 74th in 19:10.5.
Sophomore Alex Carrabre led the way for the Waconia boys with a 17th place finish in 18;21.2. Senior Tony Fulkerson rounded out the top 30 with a time of 18:56.5. Sophomore Josh Rands and seventh grader Kalin McDonough were 82nd and 83rd, separated by two-tenths of a second at 20:06.5 and 20:06.7, respectively.
Juniors Jacob Tereau and Matt Fulkerson also ran for WHS, finishing 115th and 127th in 21:02.4 and 21:29.9.
The junior varsity teams also fared well for Waconia, with the girls finishing fourth and the boys in fifth.
The Wildcats are at Delano tonight and will host their annual invitational Sept. 17 at 4 p.m.
