The Mayer Lutheran volleyball team picked up its first conference win of 2013 last week, taking down LeSueur-Henderson 3-0 on Sept. 12.
In the 25-14, 25-13, and 25-19 win, head coach Joelle Grimsley said the Crusaders came ready to play, after four days of practice that helped the team to regroup and refocus on the important details of the game.
“One of our goals, which we met, was to cut our errors in half,” Grimsley said. “The girls were able to run a more effective offensive and get more hitters involved by having better ball control. We played with much more intensity and fire which kept our momentum going throughout all of the sets.”
As a team, the Crusaders had 46 kills in 92 attempts with eight errors for a kill efficiency of 413. Senior Rachel Schmidt and junior Maria Kuntz led the team in kills, with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Senior Shelby Sicheneder had eight kills, followed by senior Sam Bartz (5), junior Maddie Bakken (2), and sophomores Maddie Miller (3), Lynnea Martlatt (2), and Kalie Winter (2).
Serving was 61-70, nearly 90 percent, with five aces. Stellar servers included Sicheneder (20-20) and senior Lauren Schroeder (8-8), along with Marlatt (9-10) and sophomore Rachel Zittergruen (5-5). Mayer Lutheran also had 39 assists, led by Schroeder (17) and Winter (16). Other assists came from Zittergruen (5) and Miller (1).
Defensively, the Crusaders collected four blocks, two each from Schmidt and Kuntz, and 46 digs. Dig leaders included senior Jessi Grimsley (16), Sicheneder (10), Schmidt (5), junior Christina Erdmann (5), Winter (3), Miller (2), and Marlatt (1).
Also during the Sept. 12 match, the Crusaders were able to make a donation to Kare 11 Randy Shaver’s Tackle Cancer organization, while many dressed in pink and showed their support. Mayer Lutheran volleyball also celebrated parents’ night.
This weekend, the Crusaders will play in the Class A showcase on Sept. 20-21. They will kick off action Friday night against Fillmore Central at 5 p.m. at the Midwest Volleyball Warehouse. Next week, LHS hosts Maple Lake (Sept. 24) before traveling to Sibley East (Sept. 26).
