Royals win dual, finish 2nd at home invite

The Watertown-Mayer/Delano girls’ swimming and diving team enjoyed its best week of the season last week, finishing second at its own invitational on Saturday, Sept. 21, and beating Waconia 93-87 in a dual on the road on Thursday, Sept. 19.

Orono won the Royals Swimming Invitational on Saturday with 315 points, but Watertown-Mayer was right behind with 285 points. Mound-Westonka/Holy Family finished third with 264 points, while Waconia, St. Peter and Minneapolis South/Washburn rounded out the field.

The Royals won one event on the day, when Jordyn Wentzel finished first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:27.36. Wentzel also finished third in the 200-yard Individual Medley in 2:25.56.

Morgan Frank also had two top-three finishes for the Royals. She was second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:05.50, and she was third in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:34.60, giving the Royals two of the top three finishers in that event.

Kayla Stevens had a pair of top-four finishes for WMD. She was third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 59.34 seconds, and she was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:08.62.

Lauren York had a fourth-place finish for WMD in the 100-yard freestyle, turning in a time of 59.73 seconds. York was also ninth in the 50-yard freestyle in 27.28 seconds.

Kalley Johnson added a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 1:15.13. Mady Hendricks was sixth in the 200-yard IM in 2:35.60 and seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:19.46.

Thea Clark added a seventh-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:09.98, and Sommer Heikkila was ninth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:10.00. Jenna Grangroth was 10th in the 200-yard IM in 2:38.85, and Maggie Jacobs was 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:21.40.

The Royals also had a strong showing in the 400-yard freestyle relay, where they had two of the top five teams. Frank, Stevens, York and Wentzel teamed up to finish third in 3:58.37, and Klara Koch, Lindsay Kantrovich, Heikkila and Sophia Fillmore finished fifth in 4:04.13.

 

WMD 93, Waconia 87

The 500-yard freestyle proved to be a key event for Watertown-Mayer/Delano down the stretch, as the Royals took the top three spots on their way to a narrow win over Waconia.

Frank won the event in 5:39.39, while Hendricks was second in 6:00.84 and Sydney Strobl was third in 6:07.47.

The Royals also closed the meet by taking the top two spots in the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. Frank, Stevens, York and Wentzel teamed up to finish first in 3:56.15 and Alexa Asbury, Koch, Fillmore and Heikkila finished second in 4:03.79.

The Royals took the top two spots in the 200-yard freestyle early in the meet, with Stevens finishing first in 2:08.64 and Caitlyn Run finishing second in 2:16.33. The Royals also had the top two finishers in the 100-yard freestyle, with Stevens finishing first in 58.48 seconds and York finishing second in 59.80 seconds.

Wentzel finished second in the 200-yard IM in 2:23.33, as well as in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:13.67. York was second in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.97 seconds, Frank was third in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:07.53, Thea Clark was third in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:09.22 and Johnson was third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:15.36.
