In a 3-1 win over Bethlehem Academy on Sept. 24, the Waconia volleyball team bested one of the top Class A squads in the state, the defending 2012 state champion Cardinals.
“First time we’ve ever beaten BA on their court,” WHS head coach Jim Lee said.
The ‘Cats were up 23-17 in the first set before Bethlehem Academy came back and would win the set 27-25. Waconia was able to build leads in the second and third sets as well, but the Cardinals always came back. Waconia won the last three sets 25-21, 25-20, and 25-18.
Junior Jessica Wolf collected a career-high 26 kills to lead the Wildcats to victory. Senior Kirsten Wagener contributed 9 kills, while junior Anna Schmitt tallied 50 assists.
Senior Sam Paulson led the back line with 19 digs, while freshman Taylor Wolf and sophomore Mikayla Williams each had three blocks.
Continuing homecoming week on the road, the Wildcats played at Mound-Westonka Thursday night, winning 25-10, 25-14, and 25-17 for a 3-0 game.
Jessica Wolf and Wagener tallied 23 kills between them, while Williams added six. Wolf also contributed 11 digs and five aces, while Taylor Wolf had three aces.
Lee said team serving has led to much of the ‘Cats success.
“Our serve receive has really been crystal clear throughout the season with Julia Allenson, Kia Pankey, and Sam Paulson leading the way, amongst others,” he said. “Jess Wolf demonstrated some great serving which allowed us to go up 20-3 in the first set.”
The Wildcats are now 13-5 overall this season with matches next week against Orono (Oct. 8) and at Hutchinson (Oct. 10). Waconia will play in a tournament at St. Michael-Albertville on Oct. 11-12.
