Swimmers fall to MW/HF

With just one meet last week, the Waconia swimming and diving team fell to powerhouse Mound-Westonka/Holy Family 101-83, despite some event wins for WHS. Head coach Amy Howard said the coaching staff is using the last few regular season meets to best decide who will swim which event at True Team Sections, the Wright County Conference meet, and the section tournament.

“Just moving kids around now to see what the best fit is for our final meets and using these opportunities to do so,” Howard said.

The ‘Cats finished second and third in the 200 medley relay. Sophomores Jessica Stangret and Marri Saunders, along with senior Mari Rathke, pulled down points for WHS in the 200 freestyle by finishing third, fourth, and fifth.

Sophomore Taylor Beynon won the 200 IM in 2:20.24, while eighth grader Karissa Ohlsen was fourth and senior Abigail Wessale finished fifth.

Junior McKinna Kahl and eighth grader Kathryn Stangret were 3-4 in the 50 free before the diving break.

In diving, WHS senior Nicole Hennen continued her winning ways by placing first in the competition with a final score of 173.95. Eighth grader Ashley Basile finished fifth of five divers at the varsity level.

After the break, Kahl and Wessale teamed up to go 2-3 in the 100 fly before sophomore Carolyn Schmieg finished second in the 100 free. Senior Rachael Sanborn was fourth in the same event.

Rathke grabbed two points for WHS by finishing fourth in the 500 free, while eighth grader Nicole Schuler grabbed the last available point with her fifth place performance.

WHS swimmers were third and fourth in the 200 free relay, followed by Jessica Stangret’s event winning 1:02.31 in the 100 backstroke. Schmieg was third in the 100 back.

Beynon won her second event of the night by taking the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.01. Seventh grader Anneli Paulson was third and freshman Emma Lohman finished fourth.

Wildcat relays finished 1-2 in the 400 free relay. Kathryn Stangret, Sanborn, Beynon, and Saunders won the event in 4:06.30, while freshman Carolyn Thom, freshman Cameren Shuster, sophomore Alyssa Kirsch, and junior Harley Ruiz were second in 4:28.21.

The junior varsity Wildcats topped Mound-Westonka/Holy Family 119-55.

Waconia is at Hutchinson tonight and will return to the Tigers pool on Saturday for True Team Sections.
