Wildcat girls seeded third in 6A

With a 4-0 win over Hutchinson on Oct. 1, the Waconia girls’ soccer team solidified its second place finish in the Wright County Conference, the best conference finish in program history, according to WHS head coach Mike Bruggeman.

The Wildcats finished the regular season 10-5-1 overall with a 9-2-1 WCC record. Orono won the conference with an 8-1-0 record.

Against Hutchinson, Bruggeman said the ‘Cats performed well creating many scoring opportunities and not giving up too many shots.

“In this game we were able to put into practice some of the concepts that we have been working on in our training sessions,” Bruggeman said.

The Wildcats’ four goals were scored by four separate players, including senior Emily Hilk, junior Trina Rinke, sophomore Taylor LeMasters, and junior Claire Sites.

Waconia finished up the regular season on Saturday with a 6-2 loss at Chanhassen. Scheduled as a home game, the contest was moved to Chanhassen’s turf field because of the possibility of soggy fields at Bayview.

“This last minute change, some missing players, and the poor weather could have contributed to our slow first half start,” Bruggeman said.

The ‘Cats trailed 4-0 at the half, but regrouped in the second half and tied the half at two goals a piece. Waconia’s two goals came from sophomores Jaidyn Zapf and Megan Kirsch.

“Chanhassen is a high quality opponent and it was good for us to face a team of this caliber going into the postseason,” Bruggeman said.

Awarded the No. 3 seed in Section 6A, the Wildcats were scheduled to play No. 12 Mayer Lutheran on Tuesday, Oct. 8. Bruggeman said the team was proud of its No. 3 seed.

“Third overall seed in Section 6A, behind No. 1 rated Benilde and a very strong Orono team,” he said. “Again, one of the best section seeding WHS girls’ soccer [has] earned and something we are very proud of.”

If the ‘Cats won Tuesday, they will host the victor of No. 6 Breck/No. 11 West Lutheran on Thursday evening at 7 p.m.

“This should be a fun week of soccer for both the boys’ and girls’ teams,” Bruggeman said.
