In the Minnesota River Conference Championships on Oct. 10, the Mayer Lutheran boys’ cross country team failed to defend their back-to-back conference titles from 2011 and 2012, but still came home with a strong fifth place finish.
“The top five LHS-LPHT boys all ran sub-20 minute 5K races,” head coach Rob Weber said. “This was the boys’ turn to run fast times as nine boys had season best performances.”
Senior Brandon Duffy led the way for the Crusaders, cruising to a second place finish in 17:13 and earning All-Conference honors.
Alex Mielke received All-Conference Honorable Mention honors for his 25th place finish, pulling in a season best time of 18:56. Mielke’s new season best time trumped his previous by 44 seconds.
Thirty-three seconds dropped found Wyatt Entinger crossing the line in 31st at 19:26. Recovering from a knee injury, Ben Quiram dropped over a minute from his previous best, finishing in 36th position at 19:50. Parker Esterberg was just one second behind Quiram in 37th place in 19:51, also a season best.
Seth Pauna and Todd Johnson also ran personal best races, with Pauna in 49th (21:05) and Johnson in 50th (21:11).
Emilie Berry won All-Conference honors for the LHS girls, finishing sixth overall in 16:09. Karlea Kyllo continued her strong debut season of cross country, crossing the line in 17:12, placing 14th and earning Honorable Mention honors.
Clara Leverich and Grace Dietrich finished in 49th and 50th positions, with Leverich in 21:06 and Dietrich at 22:43. Mikaila Norman lowered her time by over one minute to finish in 52nd position (25:57) to complete the girls’ team for the Crusaders. The team finished sixth overall of the MRC teams.
At the JV level, Andrew Jackson finished in 21:45, followed by John Bones (25:49), and Gareth Holland (26:03).
The Section 5A meet is next Thursday, Oct. 24 at Milaca. There, the Crusaders will see 24 other teams from Class A.
