Royals compete at true team sections

The Watertown-Mayer/Delano swimming team was in action twice last week, as the Royals lost a dual to Dassel-Cokato on Thursday, Oct. 10, and also competed in the Section 6AA True Team section meet in Minnetonka on Saturday, Oct. 12.

In Thursday’s dual, Dassel-Cokato beat the Royals 101-82. In the True Team section meet, the Royals finished in fifth place out of seven teams, finishing behind four of the state’s biggest schools. Eden Prairie won with 1,298 points, Edina was second, Minnetonka was third and Hopkins was fourth. The Royals scored 609.5 points, and finished ahead of Minneapolis Southwest and Minneapolis South.

Eighth-grader Jordyn Wentzel had two top-five finishes for the Royals. Her best finish was third in the 500-yard freestyle, where she logged a time of 5:23.45. She was also fifth in the 200-yard Individual Medley with a time of 2:18.66.

Seventh-grader Morgan Frank added a pair of top 15 finishes for WMD. She was 11th in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:05.49, and was also 12th in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:37.35. Other top 15 finishers for the Royals included Kalley Johnson, whose time of 1:115.93 was good for 14th in the 100-yard breaststroke, Lauren York, who took 15th in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 27.00, and Klara Koch, who swam the 100-yard butterfly in 1:09.39 to finish in 15th place.

 

DC 101, Royals 82

Dassel-Cokato picked up a Wright County Conference win a meet that was closer than the final score indicated. The Chargers picked up all 13 points in diving, because the Royals no longer have a girls’ diving program.

Wentzel won two events for the Royals, finishing first in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:03.95 and first in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:05.96. Frank also won two events, finishing first in the 200-yard IM in 2:25.47 and the 100-yard backstroke in 1:07.48.

Kayla Stevens won the 100-yard freestyle in 58.62 seconds, and also finished third in the 200-yard freestyle (2:07.34). Kalley Johnson was second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:17.45) and Emily Bobick was second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:52.39).

Third-place finishes for the Royals belonged to Jenna Grangroth in the 200-yard IM (2:32.66), Sommer Heikkila in the 50-yard freestyle (27.57), Sophia Fillmore in the 100-yard butterfly (1:09.56), York in the 100-yard freestyle (59.71), Thea Clark in the 100-yard backstroke (1:10.35) and Mady Hendricks in the 500-yard freestyle (6:00.61).

The Royals hosted a non-conference dual against Shakopee on Tuesday, Oct. 15. The Wright County Conference meet will be Saturday, Oct. 26, at Hutchinson.
