On a misty, chilly night in Golden Valley, the No. 2 Waconia boys’ soccer team upset the No. 1-seeded Breck Mustangs in a 2-1 game on Oct. 15 to earn the Wildcats’ second consecutive trip to the state tournament.

In the Section 6A final, the Wildcats and the Mustangs were tied 1-1 after the first half. Still tied 1-1 after regulation, the teams battled through two overtimes with no declared winner, leading to a shoot out.

In dramatic fashion, the Wildcats came from behind in the shoot out, winning 3-2, to clinch the Section 6A boys’ soccer title.

The Class A state tournament begins next Wednesday, Oct. 23.
