Central football upset Zumbrota-Mazeppa in a first round Section 2AA game on the road, 36-35.
Trailing 35-28 midway through the fourth quarter, Central relied on the running of Zach Storms and Noah Peterson to get to the Cougars one-yard line.
Isaac Hormann then rushed in for the score and then caught the two-point conversion from Peterson for the 36-35 lead with 2 minutes, 34 seconds remaining.
The defense, in a series punctuated by Casey Clemensen’s stop on fourth down, then forced the Cougars to turn it over on downs.
Clemensen later caught a pass on third down near the Cougars 20-yard line, before the Raiders ran out the clock with a couple of kneeldowns.
With the win, the 6-seeded Raiders (2-7) will travel to face #2 Medford on Saturday, Oct. 26, in a semifinal matchup. Medford defeated #7 Le Sueur-Henderson.
Winner of that goes on to a game on Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. in the sectional final at the high seed for a trip to state.
